Q&A with Jay Shepheard

One of the hottest new labels to launch in 2010 was Retrofit, care of our friends Jay Shepheard and partner-in-crime Marysia. To celebrate our new-look website, Shepheard has done a Millionhands mix for you to download from our new mixes page. Here’s a Q&A to tell us what he, and Retrofit, are all about…

What’s the idea behind Retrofit? In a nutshell: classic electronic music concepts with a modern edge. What new projects are in the pipeline? Got some really cool releases lined up for the label. The 3rd one is a more mid tempo affair out any day now and the next one will be a 3 tracker from me Solo out in late Nov. Apart from that been doing a few remixes lately, done one just out for Ooft! and some others coming up on labels like RebirthPokerflat and Moodmusic What’s your favourite song lyric? “Years ago when I was an angry young man, I would pretend that I was a bill board, Standing tall by the side of the road, I fell in love with the beautiful highway” from Nothing but Flowers by Talking Heads. Name 3 of your favourite records old or new? 3 oldies I love are: What you Need by Soft House Company (Irma), Your Time Is Up by Yolanda (UR), Baddest Bitch by Norma Jean Bell (Motorbass version, F Comm). Which records are you loving at the moment? I really like the new Space Dimension Controller on R&S, also Trickski’s “Phil Collins” track on Suol is a bit of a bomb too. What’s on your radar right now? Buddy Holly / Momma’s Man / Hiking / Green Papaya on Mare Street, E8. Describe your style: I’m into stuff that’s cool but understated – simple stuff. Some American Apparel, Cheap Monday, Doctor Denim, Uniqlo,  Millionhands, Electonic Poet, Lyle & Scott etc… Most visited blogs and websites?Juno, Feel My Bicep, Sendspace, RA, Discogs, BBC/weather… Where do you live & what are your favourite haunts/ hangouts? I’m in London at the moment. I can usually be found relaxing in The Dove, The Lauriston, The Spurstowe Arms, or The Cat & MuttonWhat’s your favourite hotel in the world? The Michelberger in Berlin is pretty sweet. Eggs – how do you them? Scrambled on toast or a bagel. What would you do if you had a million hands? Have VERY strong arms.
